Privet shrub also called the ligustrum shrubs. These shrubs are most commonly used as privacy hedge. Depending on the zone you are living in your privet shrubs could be evergreen, semi-evergreen, or deciduous. The most common of these shrubs reach a height of four to fifteen feet that spreads from four to eight feet. These beautiful shrubs bear white flowers in the late spring to the early summer and then after the gorgeous flowers there are plump blackberries that can be used to identify these shrubs. Mostly these shrubs are grown because of the dense foliage along with their height, that when pruned into hedges it creates a great season of privacy especially in the summer time when the yard is most used. The care that needs to be given to the privet shrubs is that shearing has to be done after the flowering, and then three to four times throughout the summer. They get fuller to when they are pruned a little more. The shrubs can be grown in partial shade or in full sun, or anywhere in between. But the soil needs to be evenly moistened but they do tolerate a wide soil pH range. The privet shrubs are cold hardy enough to grow in the north and can be used for hedges and topiaries. They actually grow more quickly and can be shaped a lot easier than the boxwood shrubs that are also used sometimes as privacy hedges. The privet hedges actually can handle the heavy pruning that is required a lot better than any other hedge shrubs.
