The Red Maple, also known as the Swamp maple, Water or Soft Maple, is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of all eastern North America. It ranges from the Lake of the Woods area on the border between Ontario and the Minnesota state, east to Newfoundland, south to near the Miami, Florida area, and southwest to east Texas state area. Many of its beautiful features, especially its nice leaves, are quite variable in form. At maturity it often attains a average height of around 15 m (50 ft). It is aptly named as its flowers, petioles, twigs and seeds are all beautifully red to varying degrees. Among these wonderful features, however, it is best known for its brilliant deep scarlet foliage in autumn months. Over most of its range, red maple trees are adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions, perhaps more so than any other known tree in eastern North America. It can be found growing in many swamps, on poor dry soils, and most anywhere in between the two areas. Zone 3-9 Mature Height: 40-50 ft. Mature Width: 30-40 ft. Growth/Year: 3 ft.
