This plant is a common fern in stream bottoms throughout much of the eastern United States. It often forms extensive colonies, growing from creeping crowns. The indusia turn silvery when the sori are close to ripening, hence the name. This plant grows well in the wetland areas and around climates that are damp and cool but get a lot amount of shade.
