Loblolly Pine are some of the fastest growing pines in the southern parts of the nation. They make a great shade tree or several together will be a great wind breaker. This lovely evergreen grows rapidly and in a very straight nature so there is little pruning needed. The lower branches even drop off as it gets taller to leave a beautiful evergreen crown. The six to ten inch needles have a great fragrance to them leading it to be nicknamed the Rosemary pine. It can also be called the bull pine for its massive stature reaching heights of sixty to ninety feet and a reach of forty to fifty feet. This beautiful pine is also used for pulpwood and lumber but our ancestors had another use of it, medicine. It is an excellent food source for many of the wildlife including deer and smaller mammals during the seed harvest. In your area there could be one bird in particular that will prefer the loblolly pine as their home, the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker. The Loblolly Pine is actually one of the most common trees in North America only outnumbered by the Red Maple.
